Raising Awareness With Rachel

You might not have known it, but in the early morning this past Saturday, a determined group of Pace University students were already off on their way to Central Park to participate in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5k Run/Walk.

According to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure website, the race is put on because of one reason, “no one should die from breast cancer”. This past Saturday, a group of Pace students under the guidance of junior Rachel Casasanta, who is a marketing major and management minor, participated in the event to raise awareness and ensure the goal of the Komen foundation becomes a reality one day.

I talked with Rachel, the Pace University team organizer who has been participating in the race/ walk ever since she was in middle school. This is her first year participating with the Pace team, and also her first year being charge! Why has she been participating for so many years? Rachel says it started at an early age, because her mom suffered from cancer, because a close friend's mom is a breast cancer survivor, and because she thinks “no matter what the cause is for, it is always important to give back.” Rachel says one of the reasons she loves doing the race/ walk is because “Donating money is nice, but it is truly thrilling to walk or run with others who support great causes such as this. You wouldn’t believe how many individuals come together every year to support the walk...it is truly inspirational.”

According to the American Cancer Society, an average 235,030 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and 40,430 will die from it. Hopefully with people like Rachel helping along the way, one day the goals of the Komen foundation will be realized, and those numbers will be 0!
