Welcome to College! Now What?

While this is an exciting time being the start of a new school year, it’s also a bit of a scary one for the Class of 2020. The freshman class has been welcomed to Pace University and their home for the next four years- but now what?

For many freshmen, this can be a difficult time. Commuter students have to get used to traveling to and from their classes everyday on an unfamiliar campus, and residential students must get used to perhaps one of the scariest things- living on their own.

“It’s a big adjustment, you can get a little homesick, but it gets a little easier everyday.” says Bri Stapleton, a freshman from New Jersey. She’s not alone with this feeling, in that a survey conducted by the UCLA Higher Education Institute reported that 69 percent of college freshmen report feeling homesick. However, she adds that not living with her parents and rooming with complete strangers “can bring out your shy side, but gives you an inside look on being with other people. It makes you realize you have to become comfortable with being uncomfortable.” A fellow freshman, who preferred to remain anonymous, said similar things when she said it’s been an adjustment not living in her mom’s house, but as an only child, she’s had to get used to one thing- “sharing my space and all my stuff.”

With the actual school year only having just started last week, Bri and her fellow freshman said there isn’t much to say about how college classes are different, only that they are a lot longer than high school classes. Still, both agreed it seems like they can expect a lot of work in the future.

So, are these freshman satisfied with choosing Pace so far? “Definitely, I like Pace.” they both agreed. The only thing they weren’t happy with? The unsurprising answer- the price of textbooks.

Hopefully these freshman continue to be satisfied with their choice!
